Fighting Acne: Food and Spiritual Approaches

Acne is a common struggle for teenagers, often linked to hormonal changes and stress. While proper skincare is essential, diet and spiritual practices play a significant role. As a Torah observant Jewish online school, we understand that healing comes from Hashem, and we explore the various avenues He provides.

Our tradition teaches us that the power of speech, the ability to create through words and sound, is the most primal and potent tool. Prayer, when uttered with sincerity and intention, by individuals connected to Hashem, can be a powerful force for healing, even surpassing the effects of physical remedies. Indeed, Tractate Avodah Zarah discusses various herbal remedies, highlighting the tension between utilizing natural resources and relying solely on spiritual intervention. In earlier generations, the connection to Hashem was often more readily accessible, making such forms of prayer potentially more effective.

However, we recognize that not everyone is on that level of spiritual connection. While we strive to elevate ourselves through Torah study and mitzvot, we also acknowledge the need for other avenues of healing. Just as the Talmud discusses natural remedies, we too can utilize the tools Hashem has provided in nature. These are not replacements for prayer, but rather additional pathways to healing for those who are still developing their connection to the Divine.

Foods that May Help:

  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Found in fatty fish (salmon, tuna), flaxseeds, and walnuts, these reduce inflammation linked to acne.

  • Zinc: Present in pumpkin seeds, cashews, and chickpeas, zinc aids skin healing and reduces acne severity.

  • Probiotics: These beneficial bacteria, found in yogurt and fermented foods, improve gut health, reducing inflammation associated with acne.

  • Low-Glycemic Foods: Opt for whole grains, fruits, and vegetables over processed foods and sugary drinks to regulate blood sugar and hormone levels.

Spiritual Approach: Reading Tehillim

Tehillim (Psalms) are a powerful form of prayer. Reading Tehillim elevates the soul, bringing us closer to Hashem and promoting overall well-being. This spiritual practice can support hormonal and metabolic balance, which can positively influence skin health. While any Tehillim can be beneficial, some are traditionally considered particularly helpful for specific concerns. For skin improvement, some suggest focusing on Psalms 20, 100, 150, 134, and 117. However, it is important to approach Tehillim with sincerity and devotion, understanding that the power lies not in the specific words alone, but in the connection to Hashem they facilitate. Even when we utilize natural remedies, we recognize that their efficacy ultimately comes from Hashem.
